Do you have time to massage your baby?by Pinky McKay If you are thinking, ‘I couldn’t possibly fit baby massage into my busy day’ consider, just a few minutes of massaging your baby each day can help your baby feel happier, healthier and sleep better – and with better sleep patterns and less time consoling an unhappy baby, you will have more time for YOU!
- massage doesn’t have to be a ‘formal’ experience – although you can set up a lovely experience with music and oils, you can simply do a five minute mini massage ( as shown in Pinky McKay’s Baby Massage DVD) or you could massage baby’s legs and feet as you interact at nappy change time.
- Massage doesn’t have to be ‘one more thing’ to fit into your day - it is better if massage is associated with a calm parent and baby, not a rushed experience.
- Dads can do a mini massage after work or on weekends (as shown in the DVD) – An Australian study of infant massage and father-baby bonding, found that at 12 weeks old, babies who were massaged (by their fathers) greeted their fathers with more eye contact, smiling, vocalising and touch than those in the control group.
- Mothers do a lot of things TO babies like dressing and cleaning and changing nappies but it is important for your bonding and your baby’s well-being to spend time interacting WITH your baby. It’s also lovely to enjoy your baby and her responses as you connect through this loving interaction.
- As babies become more aware and have more awake time (at around eight to ten weeks) massage is a lovely way to ‘play’ -many mums are at a loss as to ‘what do we do now?’
